Claims have been made that the Greek “father of medicine” Hippocrates used specifically apple cider vinegar as a remedy, there is no actual exact match data conclusively proving this.
The best evidence is that Hippocrates did use vinegar and that there is a simple correlation being that the Ancient Greeks had plentiful supplies of apples and this would have naturally lead to the curation of apple cider vinegar.
It’s a guess at worst and at best it may be a good one.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get much better, there is sound science to suggest that the chlorogenic acid that might be found in apple cider vinegar is so powerful that in a test performed (on rats) it showed that the test subjects were pumped full of methamphetamines which potentially destroy liver cells, the effects of the chlorogenic acid showed significant protection of the liver cells and an impressive reduction in oxidative stress. This could be very encouraging and though further human testing is needed, it’s certainly an interesting study.
Diabetic Glycemic Assistance
While it’s not a cure, apple cider vinegar for diabetes sufferers can mean a noticeable reduction in the glycemic effect of food on their blood sugar which we will look at in the next segment.
So Are Apple Cider Vinegar Cures Legit?
Yes, though it won’t cure cancer, maybe one day it will help in the fight but it does have several very useful properties.
Can You Really Take Apple Cider Vinegar For Diabetes?
First, it’s really important here to have an understanding of what the glycemic effect of food is.
The glycemic effect of food is how the food you eat affects blood sugar levels which means a great deal to anyone who is a diabetic or who suffers the symptoms of diabetes.
When blood sugar is elevated, it puts a diabetic at risk, but the real benefit here of apple cider vinegar for diabetes sufferers is that it has what is called an anti-glycemic effect. (5)
Though this doesn’t mean a diabetic can run out and gorge themselves on sugary foods, but to a type 2 diabetic who could possibly control their diabetes with diet (not all of them), the effects of apple cider vinegar might be a useful tool in helping to control blood sugar.
Some diabetics are insulin dependent meaning they need an extraneous source of insulin, in which case apple cider vinegar may not help.
Hope For Type 2 Diabetics
Type 2 diabetics often have a problem with insulin resistance, meaning that the insulin their body produces doesn’t affect the glucose disposal and metabolization from the blood stream in an efficient manner.
Apple cider vinegar can especially help as the acetic acid in vinegar can play a big role in not only lowering blood glucose levels by slowing down the digestion of carbs, but it also improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin, meaning less insulin is required to process and metabolize glucose in the blood. Yes, if they are type two and are insulin resistant and not insulin dependant.
What Are The Side Effects Of Apple Cider Vinegar?
Is Apple Cider Vinegar Dangerous? It’s certainly not what you’d call dangerous at all and the truth is that most of the side effects of apple cider vinegar are pretty tame, but like anything there are exceptions.
These are some of the side effects of apple cider vinegar (ACV):
A Sore Throat
Because of the acidic, astringent nature of ACV, it can have a burning sensation if you decide to swallow it undiluted. For this reason, it is always recommended that when consuming apple cider vinegar you dilute it with at least 10:1 parts water to vinegar respectively.
Low Blood Sugar
As we discussed in an above segment, apple cider vinegar has anti-glycemic properties that can lower blood glucose levels, which is great for type 2 diabetics but potentially dangerous for type 1 diabetics who can suffer from hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar.
Type 1 diabetics may need to take care when consuming vinegar in larger than normal quantities.
Vinegar such as ACV is highly acidic and as such can damage the enamel on your teeth. Diluting apple cider vinegar is one way to reduce this
The human stomach has a sensitive PH balance and though self-correcting in the case of higher than usual acid intake, drinking apple cider vinegar can elicit an uncomfortable burning in the stomach which can be considerably painful in some individuals.
Interference With Medications
In certain doses apple cider vinegar may affect the efficacy of some medications such as diabetic and potassium lowering medication may be exacerbated by their effects, posing a serious risk.
Diuretics can also be affected by ACV, meaning caution would be advisable.
What Does This All Mean?
While there are some minor complaints associated with ACV consumption, Diabetics and those on potassium lowering meds need to take extreme care.
So is Apple Cider Vinegar Good For You?
What has to be weighed up is the several potent benefits that apple cider vinegar can produce versus the small number of negative effects.
On one hand, it’s great for type 2 diabetics, but on the other, it’s potentially dangerous to type 1 diabetics.
What we do know is 85% of diabetics are type 2, so it wins out there.
When you consider that it can help treat acne, help reduce fat absorption, that it has anti-cancer properties, and that it may have a powerful antioxidant in chlorogenic acid, you’d really have to come to the conclusion that with the right moderation, apple cider vinegar is good for you (probably very good for you).
